I guess we all know that if you’re a man in Nigeria and you’re raped, there’s nothing you can do about it considering that our laws do not recognize male rape as a thing. But here is some good news for the men as it is all about to change.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who sponsored a bill that seeks to redress sections of the criminal code act, 2004, that address rape has landed the bill to the second reading stage.
Senator Tinubu representing Lagos central, is seeking the removal of gender restrictions on rape offences as well as a proposal of stiffer penalties for kidnapping.
In her lead debate on the bill, she argued that “there are incidents of non-consensual sex perpetrated against the male gender,” and described the code’s definition of rape as something that happens to women as “grievous.” Stating also that it perpetrates the socio-cultural belief that men do not need to consent to sexual acts.
After the debate on the bill, Senate President Ahmad Lawan referred it to the senate committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters for further legislative work.
